MOGADISHU, Somalia – A prominent Nigerian Senator has on Saturday slammed attempts to use a breakaway region to undermine the sovereignty of Somalia, Garowe Online reports.

Senator Shehu Sani condemned Guinea’s move to accord the protocol of the head of state to Somaliland leader, Muse Bihi Abdi in Conakry last week which sparked a diplomatic breakdown between the two AU member states.

Somaliland is a self-declared state that the international community considered to be part of the regions in Somalia despite its claims of secession from the rest of the Horn of Africa country.

“It’s wrong for Guinea or any West African Country to accord any form of recognition to Somaliland or any breakaway part of Somalia. There is only one Somalia,” said the Senator.

The Challenges of Somalia is a phase and shall someday be history, he added.

On Saturday, Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs has called on foreign countries to respect the country's sovereignty during a meeting with the accredited ambassadors residing in Mogadishu.

Ahmed Isse Awad stressed that the decision to sever its diplomatic relations with Guinea was correct and firm to preserve the sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity of Somalia.

In a statement, Awad noted that Somalis alone through dialogue are the ones who solve their internal problems and decide their national, political, economic and social options without any external interference.
