On the Road to Jilib: How Jubaland Forces Closed In on Al-Shabaab’s Biggest Stronghold

KISMAYO, Somalia - Jubaland’s regional forces have secured the strategic Jamame town, in what could mark the biggest assault against the Al-Shabaab militants in the Lower Jubba region of southern Somalia.

According to multiple reports, the forces that are within frontlines have taken key positions that could lead to the strategic Jilib corridor, a major Al-Shabaab stronghold. "They have been able to secure it," a source said.

The information about this particular operation, however, was kept limited to members of the public due to its sensitive nature, but these gains mark a significant strategic shift in southern Somalia.

Last week, the forces liberated the Jamaame town, a key motivational factor as the troops push further north to Jilib town. The town is believed to be a major Al-Shabaab stronghold, with the key leaders believed to be operating from some fortified caves.

The al-Shabaab group has limited operations to some specific areas, given the limited resources and a charged operation by the security forces. The government has for a long time strategised on unleashing in the corridor.

Already, the regional administration of Jubaland is deploying stabilisation forces to newly liberated areas along the Jamaame–Jilib corridor, according to military officials conversant with the operation.

These units are moving into areas recently recovered from Al-Shabaab to ensure civilian safety, consolidate control, and prevent militant regrouping. The operation strengthens Jubaland government authority across southern Somalia and reinforces ongoing military gains.
