Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as capital is solution, says Somalia's President
RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud says the Middle East conflict between Israel and Palestine will be solved once the United Nations embraces the two-state solution, arguing that it's the perfect proposal to end the humanitarian crisis in the region.
The Palestinian state, he said, would solve several issues including the ongoing war which has left thousands of innocent civilians dead. Israeli forces have been bombarding Palestinian territory in pursuit of the Hamas and Hezbollah fighters.
Hassan Sheikh Mohamud made the call while delivering his keynote address at the Extraordinary Summit of the Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. According to him, the people of Lebanon and Palestine are subjected to hostility due to the conflict.
He emphasized that the conflict in Gaza transcends politics and ideology, rooted deeply in human rights, dignity, and justice. The violence has also led to mass destruction of property with many security forces also dying.
“The only viable solution for peace in the Middle East is the establishment of a Palestinian state with its 1967 borders and Jerusalem as its capital,” President Mohamud stated.
Hassan Sheikh now wants the international community to chip in and end the war which has been ongoing for the last two years after several Israeli children and women were massacred by militia affiliated with the Palestine state.
Despite also facing internal conflicts, Somalia has been a promoter of peace in the world, robustly advocating for the Cessation of Hostilities in Gaza, Sudan and other conflict-prone regions. The government of Somalia has significantly improved in the fight against Al-Shabaab at home.
