Somali army Secures Key Wins Against Al-Shabaab in Lower Jubba and Bakool
JAMAME - The Somali National Army (SNA) continues to outmaneuver the Al-Shabaab extremists in various frontlines, gaining momentum in the process by recovering various strategic locations within the Horn of Africa nation.
After a major victory in Jamaame in Lower Jubba, the Somali National Army managed to overrun the Al-Shabaab camp in the Moora-Gaabeey area, about 37 km from Xuddur, killing at least three Al-Shabaab militants and wounding more than ten others, military officials said.
The operation was carried out by the SNA’s 9th Battalion under the 60th Division, who also seized weapons, ammunition, and other equipment used by the group during the raid. The raid was termed "successful" by those on the frontlines.
Colonel Mohamed Yariis Adan, commander of the 60th Division, said that the operation forms part of continuing efforts to degrade Al-Shabaab’s presence in Bakool and improve security for civilians.
The Al-Shabaab suffered an immense blow over the weekend in Jamaame after losing close to 60 fighters following an operation by the army with support from the US Africa Command and the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM).
The two groups have been instrumental in assisting the local army in reining in the militants who continue to wreak havoc on the frontlines. The group is fighting to topple the fragile UN-backed federal government of Somalia.
However, the strong military presence in central and southern regions has temporarily halted the group's progress, whose influence is rapidly waning. The government of Somalia projects that by the end of 2026, the Al-Shabaab militants will have been defeated.
