Somali cabinet approves appointments of new envoys

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Under the leadership of Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, the Somali cabinet has approved the appointment of 14 envoys as the country seeks to expand and enhance diplomatic missions across the world in the middle of progress in terms of stability.

The decision to appoint 12 ambassadors and two Consul Generals was arrived at following an emergency meeting summoned by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre. Their new stations were not immediately declared by the cabinet.

Among those appointed were Jama Hassan Khalifa who is currently the Minister of Communications and Technology. Khalifa has implemented policies that helped resume diplomatic relations with Cuba after 46 years.

Another notable inclusion is Hodan Osman Abdi who was the Executive Director of the Center for East African Studies at Zhejiang University in China. Known for her documentary "Africans in Yiwu," she has also served as a foreign relations advisor to the Somali Prime Minister.

Abdinur Dahir Fidow the former State Minister for Defence played a role in the handover of the Maslah Forward Operating Base from the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to the Somali National Army.

Others are Ilyas Ali Hassan, Abdiweli Hirsi Abdulle (Indhaguran), Ibrahim Omar Shegow, Sheikhnur Mohamed Hassan, Dr. Abdulkhadir A. Hashi, Fardowsa Mohamed Qanyare, and Faisal Ahmed Salad.

Also included were Abib Musa Farah, Dr. Sakhawadin Mustaf Mohamed, and Mohamed Abukar Zubeer. The Consul Generals on the list were Abdiweli Hirsi Abdulle (Indhaguran) and Abdikarin Ahmed Mohamed. This was a surprise move by the government.

Somalia has massively invested in international relations and diplomacy despite internal wrangles affecting the country. International partners have played a key role in supporting the country's security and prosperity.
