MUQDISHO, Somalia – The Somali government deployed additional security forces on Friday to the strategic highway connecting the capital, Mogadishu, to the agricultural town of Afgooye in the Lower Shabelle region, following reports of increased activity by Al-Shabaab militants in the area.

Security officials confirmed that Al-Shabaab fighters have been spotted in several villages along the route, including Xaawo Cabdi, Lafoole, and Ceelasha Biyaha, throughout the past week. There are concerns the group might attempt to infiltrate Mogadishu, as militants were reportedly seen inspecting vehicles on the road.

In response to the growing security threat, Somali forces have initiated large-scale operations aimed at restoring order and securing the vital route.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for a deadly attack on the town of Bariire, located approximately 65 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu. According to the group, their fighters stormed the town early Friday morning, causing significant casualties. However, local authorities have yet to provide an official statement on the incident.

Bariire and surrounding areas have been the site of frequent clashes between Al-Shabaab and government forces, with the militant group reportedly targeting vital infrastructure.

Al-Shabaab militants were also accused of destroying bridges in the region, including those in Bariire, Sabiid, Caanoole, and Awdheegle, as part of a broader strategy to disrupt government operations.

The increase in violence marks a troubling escalation in Al-Shabaab's ongoing insurgency, with government forces vowing to intensify efforts to counter the group's advances across the country.
