MOGADISHU, Somalia — The speaker of Somalia’s lower house of parliament has rejected an impeachment motion filed against the country’s president, according to a lawmaker who said more than 120 legislators supported the initiative.

Aden Mohamed Nur, widely known as Aadan Madoobe, declined to accept the motion seeking the removal of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, said Dahir Amin Jesow, a member of the House of the People of Somalia.

Jesow told reporters that the motion, submitted by a group of lawmakers, included “serious accusations” against the president but was not forwarded for legal processing as required for such measures. He said the speaker refused to accept the motion, citing political considerations.

According to Jesow, the speaker expressed concern that advancing the motion could trigger a confrontation with the president. The lawmaker added that the speaker also pointed to ongoing tensions involving the South West State, saying he could not open another political front while already facing disputes linked to that region.

Jesow further alleged that the speaker is under pressure due to political disagreements in South West State, which he said were influencing decision-making within parliament.

There was no immediate comment from the office of the speaker or the presidency.
