Somali PM urges youth to enhance role in peace, reconstruction

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somali Prime Minister Mohamed Roble on Saturday urged the youth to take part in the reconstruction and democratization of the country.

In a statement issued in Mogadishu to mark the 78th anniversary of the Somali Youth Day, Roble called on the youth to build on the legacy of the Somali Youth League (SYL) that spearheaded the struggle for a united and independent Somalia in the 1940s and 1950s.

He said 78 years ago, 13 young Somalis founded the SYL, which played a key role in the country's road to liberation, noting that the youth have innovative thinking which can contribute a clear vision that can change Somalia, just like the SYL heroes.

According to the prime minister, the youth who led the struggle have taught the world and Somali people the strength of the youth and how they can achieve success in all areas.

"Somali youth are at the heart of our country, and they make up more than 70 percent of the population, which means our country is a young country," said Roble.

Roble noted that his government, recognizing the importance of Somali youth, is giving priority to their development and strengthening their participation in decision-making processes, especially politics and leadership.

"I urge young Somalis, both boys, and girls, to play their part, unite and work together to get our country out of its current predicament," he added.

Somali Youth Day is an annual event that signifies the beginning of the struggle for independence by a group of young Somalis who founded the Somali Youth League on May 15, 1943, which became instrumental in Somalia's push for independence.
