Somalia: Al Shabaab militiamen storm Banadir Intelligence base

MOGADISHU, Somalia August 31, 2014 (Garowe Online)-Al Shabaab gunmen broke their way into Mogadishu’s Banadir Intelligence base in volatile Mogadishu following serious blows on the frontline on Sunday, Garowe Online reports.

Militants in suicide vests and military fatigues engaged in an ‘hour’ long firefight with intelligence officers shortly after a car packed full of explosives went off at an entrance to Godka Jilicow base where terror suspects are held, officials said.

Plumes of black smoke could be seen over the scene of the pre-planned attack, with sources disclosing that five bodies of the attackers are lying on the ground.

Series of explosions followed the first gun-battle and car bomb attack inside the intelligence facility.

A spokesman for Al Qaeda linked Al Shabaab group said they carried out the apparently coordinated rampage.

Somali militant group has honed military-style ambushes, suicide bombings and planned assassinations largely in Mogadishu, making security situation extremely volatile.

Al Shabaab lost strategic town of Bulo Marer, 120km south of Mogadishu in intense military campaign over the weekend.
