Somalia: Dire situation as clashes loom over militant attack on Kenya base

Dire humanitarian situation has been reported in the village of El Ade where Al Shabaab raid took place by the weekend, Garowe Online reports.

Hundreds of residents fled their homes for fears of further confrontations between Kenyan-AMISOM peacekeepers and Al Shabaab militants.

A resident told BBC Somali Service that people are in need of humanitarian assistance due to severe water shortage and dwindling food supplies in remote areas.

Displaced families are in semi-arid vicinities that exposed them to extreme sunny weather. Meanwhile, Kenyan fighter jets have flown at lower altitude on hunt for fleeing Kenyan soldiers after militants launched a deadly raid on Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) serving with African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) camp in Gedo region village of El Ade on Friday.

Al Shabaab claimed what’s thought to be deadliest assault on Kenyan peacekeepers, saying militants killed 63 soldiers—figures have neither been confirmed nor denied by both Somali government and troop contributing Kenya. Kenyans injured in the attack were airlifted to Nairobi on Sunday.

Al Shabaab has lost large chunk of grounds against Somali government forces aided by African Union peacekeepers over the last few years.
