Somalia: Donor summit underway in Denmark amid political deadlock

GAROWE, Somalia Nov 19, 2014 (Garowe Online)-Amidst damaging political deadlock, Somalia donors gathered for a summit discussing New Deal Compact for Reconstruction and Development on Wednesday, Garowe Online reports.

More than 140 countries attended the two-day high level partnership forum on Somalia that is being co-chaired by Federal Government of Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and United Nations under-secretary general for political affairs Jeffrey D. Feltman.

Speaking at the event, President Mohamud noted that New deal Somali Compact became a testament to the partnership between the war-ravaged horn of Africa nation and the international community,

“The Somali Compact highlights the importance of Somali-owned and -led planning based on establishing joint priorities,” said Somalia President, adding that his administration laid the basic building blocks of state reform, developed legal frameworks, re-structured key institutions, developed the path for political reform and put in place the architecture for linking international support to Somalia priorities through the New Deal Compact.

On his side, D. Feltman told participants that Somalia can’tafford to relapse into anarchy and division.

Meanwhile, Egypt’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry declared at the conference that Egypt remained committed to alleviating the suffering of Somali people and called for collective response to humanitarian crisis in southern and central part of the country.

On Extremism, Shoukry admitted that terrorism is not confined to Somalia but crossed the borders everywhere by acknowledging Egyptian role in series of mediation efforts.

The political infighting between President and Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed was also raised in the two-day ministerial forum on Somalia, with the donors asking the two to bring the dispute to an end.

In attendance were also Federal states including Puntland, Jubaland, Galmudug and southwest administration.
