Somalia Executes Three More al-Shabaab Members After Conviction for Deadly Attacks

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Three more members of al-Shabaab were executed on Thursday following their conviction by the military court, which linked their activities to the violent Islamic militants, who have caused havoc in the Horn of Africa nation.

According to court documents, the three militants were found guilty of carrying out assassinations and explosions in the capital, Mogadishu, leading to the death of several people, including resilient military officers.

They were also linked to violence in the neighbouring Lower Shabelle region, which has been the epicentre of the battles between the Somali National Army (SNA), the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the militants.

The three were identified as Abukar Ahmed Mohamed, Hamse Jeylani Abdullahi “Abtiga”, and Hassan Ali Hussein “Garaad”. The court placed them in various murder scenes, leading to the landmark ruling that led to their execution, Thursday.

This brings to number of al-Shabaab convicts executed so far in August 2025 to six, further signalling the significance of the fight against al-Shabaab, using the judicial system, which accords all the accused the mandatory right to a fair hearing.

Last week, the Somali government executed three men convicted of assassinating two security forces, a civil servant, an army medic and two civilians, in separate attacks in Mogadishu and Afgoye, officials said.

The three were identified as Abdi Hassan Roble, a grenade thrower and assassin; Ibrahim Omar Haji Sham’un, a surveillance agent and assassin, and Qudama Hamze Yusuf, a member of al-Shabaab’s Ightiyalat in the Banadir region.

Qudama was convicted by the military tribunals in January 2023, while the other two were convicted in 2022. The government is fighting Al-Shabaab using the military, internal mechanisms such as controlling financial flow and also through the robust military courts.
