Somalia faces budget pressure as Turkish support stalls

MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s federal government has confirmed a delay in budgetary support it typically receives from Turkey, with the finance minister saying the funds have not arrived this year.

Finance Minister Bihi Iman Igeh told reporters that the Turkish government, a close ally of Somalia, has not disbursed its annual budget support in the year now nearing its end.

“In previous years, Turkey consistently provided budget support,” Ige said. “This year’s support, which amounts to $30 million, has been delayed. In earlier years, it was paid regularly.”

He said Somalia has received most of its budget support this year from other international partners, including the European Union, the United Nations and several friendly countries.

The delay has raised questions in Mogadishu about why Turkey, one of Somalia’s closest partners in development, security and humanitarian assistance, has yet to release the funds.

The finance minister’s comments come as Somalia’s federal budget for the year exceeds $1 billion and awaits approval by parliament. The country is facing widespread fiscal pressure that has affected both the federal government and regional administrations, underscoring the importance of external budget support.
