Somalia: Federal cabinet passes 2015 Nat’l Budget

MOGADISHU, Somalia Nov 18, 2014 (Garowe Online)-Federal Government of Somalia’s Council of Ministers passed a budget standing at $216 million for 2015-2016 fiscal year in an overwhelming vote with Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed Mohamed present on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

The national budget which is composed of domestic revenues and international assistance would go to the security, social services and development sectors according to a press statement from the office of the Prime Minister.

“The 2015 national budget consists of transparent revenues and expenditures,” said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Ridwan Hirsi Mohamed who afterwards addressed reporters on the weekly cabinet meet.

“The government made progress in public sector financial management by setting up effective institutions as we have seen during 2014-2015 fiscal year,” noted the Deputy Prime Minister, adding that Somalia Federal Government will concentrate on developing public financial management environment.

Meanwhile, as part of efforts aimed at realizing vision 2016 cabinet ministers approved Boundary and Federalization Commission as well as Independent National Electoral Commission.

“The approval of these commissions signals major milestone in the process of federalization and holding credible, transparent and democratic elections by 2016,” he went on.

Prime Minister Mohamed has locked horns with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in cabinet reshuffle last month.

Ever since, international partners have been expressing concern over the fate of vision 2016, with the biggest donor US reportedly threatening Somalia with funding cuts.
