MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia on Tuesday welcomed a memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran, saying the agreement could help reduce tensions and promote stability in a region critical to global trade and security.

In a statement, Somalia’s Foreign Ministry described the understanding as a positive step toward de-escalation and dialogue, and praised both countries for choosing diplomacy to address their differences.

“The Federal Republic of Somalia welcomes the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran as a positive step toward de-escalation, dialogue, and regional stability,” the ministry said.

Somalia also commended Pakistan, Qatar, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey for supporting diplomatic efforts that led to the agreement. The government further acknowledged what it described as the role played by U.S. President Donald Trump in advancing peace initiatives.

Mogadishu said it hoped the agreement would be implemented in good faith and would help protect civilians, ensure freedom of navigation, and prevent a further escalation of tensions.

The Somali government reaffirmed its support for diplomacy, respect for international law, and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

The statement comes as Somalia continues to stress the importance of regional stability, given its strategic location along the Gulf of Aden and near major shipping routes linking the Red Sea to international markets.

The Horn of Africa nation said it supports all efforts to promote peace, security, and stability in the Middle East, the Horn of Africa, and the Red Sea region.
