Somalia Hires Firm Linked to Donald Trump to Prevent U.S. Troop Withdrawal

Washington — The Somali government has hired a Washington, D.C.-based lobbying firm with ties to former U.S. President Donald Trump to prevent the potential withdrawal of American troops from Somalia.
In late November 2024, Somalia’s Ambassador to the U.S., Dahir Hassan Arab, signed a one-year, $600,000 contract with BGR Group, founded by prominent Republican figures, including former Mississippi Governor Haley Barbour. The firm’s team also includes Tom Locke, a former deputy assistant director of the FBI.
Trump pulled the U.S. military out of Somalia at the end of his term. His successor, Joe Biden, reversed the decision and sent troops back to the country in 2022.
The Somali government is now seeking continued military support from the U.S., which it believes is vital in its fight against extremist groups operating within its borders. Somalia’s leaders hope BGR Group can help ensure this support continues.
BGR Group is known for its connections to Republican Party figures and its lobbying efforts for international clients seeking influence in Washington.
