Somalia: Jubaland Forces Advance Toward Jilib, Al-Shabaab's main Stronghold After Jamaame Victory

KISMAYO, Somalia - The regional troops of Jubaland have intensified operations against the Al-Shabaab militants in Middle and Lower Jubba, with the recent victory in Jamaame motivating the soldiers to move northwards towards Jilib, a traditional stronghold of the militants.

According to reports, the newly trained elite Darawiish unit, Duufaan (The Storm), is preparing for deployment as forces tighten control across the Jamaame–Jilib corridor. The corridor is a critical supply route but is constantly under Al-Shabaab check.

Internal Security Minister Maj. Gen. Yusuf Hussein Dhumal, accompanied by Ministry Director General Hared Kales Abdi, inspected the training camp on Sunday. Commanders said Duufaan has completed advanced rapid-response and stabilisation training and is ready for frontline duties.

The unit is expected to play a key role in securing newly liberated areas and preventing militant infiltration, following two weeks of major gains in Jamaame. Several militants were killed in Jamaame as the troops moved towards Jilib.

Officials say Duufaan’s deployment comes at a decisive moment, as al-Shabaab faces shrinking territory and mounting pressure along the Juba River. But the troops continue stabilisation efforts in Jamaame and the surrounding villages following recent liberation gains.

Security units on the ground are maintaining a steady presence to ensure calm, protect civilians, and prevent any potential disruption as normal life begins to return.

Residents have welcomed the operations, and early signs of restored movement and community activity are already visible. The district, long a strategic buffer for the militants, is now under Jubaland government control.

The forces are also consolidating gains and securing surrounding villages, including Manamufo, Araare, and Koban, while preparing to press further toward Al-Shabaab’s stronghold in Jilib. Most Alshabaab leaders are domiciled in Jilib.
