Somalia: Jubaland State VP Dies in Nairobi Hospital After Illness

NAIROBI, Kenya – The Second Vice President of Somalia’s Jubaland regional state, Abdikadir Haji Mohamud Lugadheere, has died at a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, where he had been receiving medical treatment in recent days, officials said on Saturday.

According to local authorities, Lugadheere had been battling health complications and succumbed to his illness earlier today in the Kenyan capital.

Jubaland President Ahmed Mohamed Islam, commonly known as Ahmed Madobe, extended his condolences to the people of Jubaland and the wider Somali public, describing the late vice president as a committed statesman and a key figure in the region’s reconciliation efforts.

“He was a national hero who played a visible role in the reconciliation processes in Jubaland, dedicating most of his life to unity, social cohesion, and community development,” President Madobe said in a statement.

Madobe praised Lugadheere as a leader determined to find peaceful solutions to ongoing challenges in the region and someone who consistently worked to bring communities together.

Lugadheere’s death marks a significant loss for Jubaland’s leadership during a time of continued state-building and peace efforts in southern Somalia.
