MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has renewed an offer of amnesty to members of the Al-Shabaab, urging them to leave the group and rejoin society without fear of punishment.

In remarks made at a mosque in the State House [Villa Somalia] on Friday, President Mohamud emphasized that those who defect from Al-Shabaab will not face humiliation or imprisonment. He highlighted that former militants who have left the group are now living with dignity, working within the security forces, government, and even the private sector.

"You will not be humiliated, you will not be jailed… those who defected live with dignity, they are members of the security forces, they are members of the government, they are in the business sector," Mohamud said.

Al-Shabaab, which is designated as a terrorist organization by both Somalia and the United States, has been waging an insurgency in the country for over a decade. Despite its violent campaign, Mohamud’s government continues to offer a path for reconciliation for those willing to abandon the group.

The president also sought to downplay recent security alerts regarding potential attacks in Somalia, including in the capital, Mogadishu. He reassured the public that the government was taking necessary measures to ensure safety and stability.

Al-Shabaab has yet to respond to the amnesty offer, but the president's remarks reflect his ongoing effort to weaken the group's influence by offering former members a chance to reintegrate into Somali society.
