MOGADISHU, Somalia — Somalia’s federal government has stepped up security in the capital as opposition groups prepare to hold demonstrations in designated areas amid growing political tensions over the country’s electoral process.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reportedly held consultations with senior security officials and ordered the deployment of additional forces along key roads in Mogadishu, according to security sources.

The Somali National Army (SNA) leadership also met logistics officials on Wednesday morning as part of wider preparations to maintain order during the planned protests.

Opposition figures, including former senior officials, have announced plans to stage demonstrations in the capital, insisting on what they describe as constitutional rights to peaceful assembly and political expression. Government officials, however, have indicated that rallies should be confined to specific, designated locations to avoid unrest.

The political standoff comes amid deepening disputes between the federal government and opposition leaders over elections, governance, and the end of constitutional mandates. International partners have recently urged Somali leaders to return to dialogue and agree on an electoral roadmap to prevent further escalation.

While both sides have publicly called for restraint, residents in Mogadishu have expressed concern over the heightened security presence and the possibility of clashes if the situation is not managed through political compromise.
