Somalia: Puntland President Deni Warns of Gedo Conflict Risks, Potential Collapse of Somali State
GAROWE, Somalia — Puntland President Said Abdullahi Deni on Thursday called on the Somali Federal Government to immediately stop ongoing military operations in the Gedo region, warning that the internal conflict threatens national unity and undermines efforts to combat terrorism.
In a strongly worded statement, Deni condemned the deployment of federal troops to Gedo, which has led to clashes among government forces. He said the violence has resulted in significant casualties and widespread displacement.
“It is deeply unfortunate that the federal government is sending troops into Gedo, sparking internal confrontations among its own forces,” Deni said. “These actions are causing both loss of life and mass displacement.”
Deni urged federal leaders to prioritize the interests of the Somali people and avoid political agendas that could spark further civil unrest.
“I call on the federal government to act wisely and respect the will and welfare of the Somali people,” he said. “What is happening now poses a serious threat of national collapse if left unchecked.”
He accused the federal government of fueling politically motivated internal conflicts, rather than safeguarding the unity and stability of the nation.
“It is distressing to see a government entrusted with protecting national cohesion instead engaged in organizing chaos and conflict for short-term political gains,” he added.
The Puntland leader also warned that the federal government’s actions risk eroding international confidence and support for Somalia’s rebuilding efforts.
Deni highlighted that while extremist group al-Shabaab is regaining control of key areas, the government remains focused on launching offensives in peaceful regions — a move he described as misguided and counterproductive.
