MOGADISHU, May 2025 – Somalia’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ali Balcad, has confirmed that President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud plans to hold a meeting next month with former national leaders who currently lead the opposition against the government.

The meeting, which follows pressure from the international community, is expected to focus on finding a political solution to the ongoing disputes surrounding the constitution and the electoral process, issues that have fueled significant tensions in recent weeks.

Sources indicate that international partners, concerned about the political deadlock and its potential impact on the country’s stability and state-building efforts — which have required substantial financial and military support — have been instrumental in pushing for the dialogue.

However, it remains unclear whether the opposition factions will accept the invitation to participate, as some have previously expressed criticism and mistrust toward the current administration.

The dialogue is viewed as a critical step toward bridging political divides and establishing an inclusive framework to manage Somalia’s transitional phase, particularly ahead of the 2026 elections, which President Hassan Sheikh is preparing to contest for a third term.
