MOGADISHU — Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is planning to host a special meeting in Mogadishu with the leaders of the South West, Galmudug, and HirShabelle regional states. The regional heads expected to attend include Abdiasis Hassan Mohamed (Laftagareen), Ahmed Abdi Kariye (Qoorqoor), and Ali Gudlawe Hussein.

Though the official agenda has not yet been publicly disclosed, the meeting is expected to focus on the 2026 election process and the country’s political transition.

Significant challenges loom over Somalia’s electoral process, with Jubaland and Puntland administrations opting out of the planned election discussions. This absence complicates the political landscape and casts uncertainty over the future of elections and the country’s overall stability.

The ongoing dispute between the Jubaland and Puntland administrations and the federal government continues to hinder political dialogue, with both regional states demanding respect for previous agreements and a constitution-based election framework.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and other participating leaders are anticipated to deliberate on ways to reach an inclusive and lasting solution to ensure a transparent and credible election — a crucial step for advancing Somalia’s peace and governance.
