Somalia says efforts failed to reverse U.S. entry ban on World Cup referee Omar Artan
MOGADISHU – Somalia's government said it had failed to overturn a U.S. decision barring Somali international referee Omar Artan from entering the country to participate in the FIFA World Cup, despite diplomatic efforts involving multiple government institutions.
In a statement, Somalia's Ministry of Youth and Sports expressed regret over the circumstances that prevented Artan from taking part in the tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The ministry said it launched diplomatic engagements in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Office of the President after Artan was denied entry to the United States.
According to the government, Somali officials held direct contacts with U.S. authorities and FIFA in an attempt to have the decision reviewed, but those efforts were unsuccessful.
"The extensive efforts undertaken did not succeed in reversing the restriction imposed on the referee," the ministry said.
Artan, who had been selected among FIFA's World Cup match officials, was expected to become the first Somali referee to officiate at football's premier international tournament.
The ministry described him as a symbol of the talent, perseverance and determination of Somali youth, saying his achievements had brought pride and recognition to the country.
"Referee Omar Artan is a clear example of the ability, resilience and hard work of Somali youth," the statement said. "His international accomplishments are a source of honour for the Somali people and demonstrate that existing challenges cannot prevent our youth from reaching the highest levels globally."
The ministry reiterated its full support for Artan and pledged to continue backing his professional development and participation in future international opportunities.
It also thanked Somali citizens, sports officials and supporters who rallied behind the referee during the controversy, describing him as a national role model whose achievements continue to inspire younger generations.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has said Artan was denied entry after security vetting procedures, but has not publicly disclosed further details about the decision. The case has sparked debate in Somalia, where his World Cup appointment had been widely celebrated as a historic milestone for the country's sporting community.
