Somalia: Southwest Presidency Denies Dialogue Requests with FGS Following Laftagareen’s Re-election

BAIDOA, Somalia — The presidency of Somalia’s Southwest State on Sunday issued a firm denial of reports suggesting that the newly re-elected regional leader, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed, known as Laftagareen, had requested formal talks with President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud.

The statement from Baidoa came just hours after social media platforms were flooded with claims that Laftagareen had reached out to Villa Somalia to initiate a dialogue following his victory in the regional leadership race. Officials in the Southwest administration dismissed the reports as "baseless and fabricated," asserting that no such communication had taken place between the two offices.

Tensions between the federal government in Mogadishu and the Southwest State have been high in recent months, fueled by deep-seated disagreements over the national electoral roadmap and the deployment of federal security forces in the region.

The International partners said they had closely watched the aftermath of the Baidoa vote for any signs of a diplomatic thaw, but the swift denial from Laftagareen’s camp suggests that a political impasse remains.

The Southwest presidency maintained that its current focus is on regional stability and the completion of its internal political processes, rather than engaging in new negotiations with the central government. The federal presidency has yet to issue an official comment on the reports or the subsequent denial from Baidoa.
