Ugandan Deputy Defence Chief Arrives in Mogadishu as AUSSOM Faces Financial Challenges

MOGADISHU, May 17 – Ugandan Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Sam Okiding, arrived in Mogadishu on Saturday, where he was warmly received by senior officials from both the Somali Army and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM). Okiding’s visit comes at a critical time for AUSSOM, which is currently grappling with significant financial challenges as it seeks to maintain its operations in Somalia.
Since 2007, Uganda has been the largest contributor to the African Union mission in Somalia, providing personnel and resources to both the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) and its successor missions, including the ongoing AUSSOM and the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Uganda’s involvement has been central to the mission’s success in combating insurgent groups and supporting the Somali government’s security efforts.
AUSSOM, which is tasked with facilitating the transition of security responsibilities to the Somali government, has been facing increasing financial difficulties. The mission’s budget constraints have led to concerns about its ability to effectively carry out its mandate, particularly as it shifts from an active combat role to one focused on training and mentoring Somali security forces.
During his visit, Okiding is expected to discuss the operational and financial challenges faced by AUSSOM and to reaffirm Uganda’s commitment to the peace and stability of Somalia. Uganda’s contribution to AUSSOM and its predecessor missions has been crucial to maintaining security and providing support to Somalia’s government, particularly in the face of ongoing threats from militant groups such as Al-Shabaab.
Okiding’s visit underscores Uganda’s continued peacekeeping role in Somalia and its commitment to the African Union’s peacekeeping efforts in the region, even as financial difficulties loom over the mission’s future. His discussions with Somali officials and AUSSOM leadership are anticipated to focus on strategies to address these financial strains and ensure the continued success of the mission.
