Somalia: Somaliland court issues sentences to traffickers

ERIGAVO, Somalia, January 12, 2016 (Garowe Online)-A court in separatist Somaliland region has issued sentences ranging from death to prison terms for three alleged human traffickers on Tuesday, Garowe Online reports.

Sanag court chairman Adan Jam Saleban has announced verdicts unleashed on the three defendants convicted of serious charges including killings and other life-threatening tortures aboard unseaworthy boat in the Red Sea.

The men arraigned in the court are reported to be all Somalis.

Ahmed Omar Abdirahim (Hanjeh) was sentenced to death while two colleagues—Mohamed Bashir Mohamed and Mohamed Yasin Ali—were given fines amounting to SL. Sh. 15m to SL Sh. 5m and one-year prison sentence respectively.

Somaliland coast guards captured the traffickers in raid off its coast, confirming 11 of dozens on board dead for starvation and severe thirst on January 8.
