ADDIS ABABA - The president of Somalia's northern breakaway region, Somaliland Muse Bihi Abdi has arrived in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital on Wednesday, Garowe Online reports.

Bihi and his delegation, including Ministers and high-ranking Somaliland government, were welcomed by Ethiopian Finance Minister, Ahmed Shide and Hirut Zemene, State Minister of Foreign Affairs at Bole International Airport.

According to the sources, the Somaliland President is expected to meet with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to discuss a range of matters, mainly the regional issues.

Somaliland, which is a former British protectorate has remained largely unrecognized following its self-declared independence from Somalia in 1991.

The self-declared republic of Somaliland is currently in a battle with Puntland and are locked in a standoff over Sool and Sanaag areas, leading to deadly clashes for years after both sides massed soldiers in the contested areas.

The contest boiled in January 2018 after Somaliland forces captured Tukaraq, a key strategic town in Sool region from Puntland state troops following an incursion.
