Somalia: Somaliland President says ‘majority want int’l recognition’

HARGEISA, Somalia- Somaliland President Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud (Silanyo) has said, most people support bid for independence as Somalia gears up for elections later this year, Garowe Online reports.
Speaking in the capital, Hargiesa, President Silanyo announced that a referendum poll commissioned by the government reveals overwhelming support for international recognition.
More than one million people participated in the poll that almost garnered ‘yes win’ according to Somaliland.
President Silanyo added that his region deserves recognition from the world as hope in another unity continues to fade.
Somaliland, located in northwestern Somalia declared its independence from the rest of the country as a de facto sovereign state in 1991 but it has not been recognized internationally yet.
