NAIROBI, Kenya - Multi-agency security teams led by the Kenya Defense Forces [KDF] have destroyed an Al-Shabaab makeshift camp in Northeastern Kenya, police reports indicate, in the latest crackdown targeting the militants in the Horn of Africa nation.

Kenya has mobilized security teams along the border with Somalia following increased incidents of terrorism a few months ago, postponing the planned re-opening of the border with the country. A number of KDF soldiers were positioned in Forward Operating Bases which were established recently.

The raid, officials said, targeted the militants at a makeshift camp at Dabalwein in Ijara, Garissa County, and killed an Al-Shabaab militant while others escaped with serious injuries. The team is pursuing those who managed to escape.

Police reports indicate that the security team also recovered 3 AK 47 magazines, rounds of ammunition, medicines, foodstuff, and personal effects. At least three other similar camps were destroyed in the last month within the same vicinity.

In recent weeks the Multi-Agency Security Teams have heightened operations to pursue Al-Shabaab militants in Garissa County and other counties to preempt planned attacks in the country. The government of Kenya had deployed Special Forces within the region.

The successful operation thwarted planned AlShabaab attacks against both civilians and security personnel in Garissa County. Members, of the public, officials said, are advised to exercise vigilance and report terrorism activities to security agencies for action.

Al-Shabaab militants are also facing similar onslaught from neighboring Somalia, forcing a number of them to surrender to security teams. The government of Somalia is planning the second and perhaps final operation against the group in Jubaland and Southwest states.
