Ethiopia Mourns Somaliland Ex-President Siilaanyo, Praises His Role in Bilateral Ties

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia  — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia has released an official statement mourning the death of Ahmed Mohamed Mohamud, the former President of Somaliland known as Siilaanyo, who passed away at the age of 86.

In the message, Ethiopian officials praised Siilaanyo for his efforts in fostering a deep and enduring friendship between Ethiopia and Somaliland. During his tenure from 2010 to 2017, he was recognized for his contributions to regional stability and economic cooperation, particularly through infrastructure and trade agreements that benefited both territories.

"President Ahmed Mohamed was more than a leader to his nation; he was a bridge between our peoples," the statement noted, highlighting his diplomatic engagements that solidified relations despite Somaliland's lack of international recognition as a sovereign state.

The Ethiopian Ministry emphasized the personal loss felt by the family of Siilaanyo, offering condolences and solidarity. "Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and the entire Somaliland community as they navigate through this time of sorrow," the ministry added.

Siilaanyo's death comes at a time when Somaliland is experiencing political transition following recent elections, adding a layer of complexity to the region's political landscape. His legacy is expected to be a focal point during the state funeral planned for November 18, 2024, with Ethiopian dignitaries likely to attend in honor of his contributions to bilateral relations.

The ministry's condolences reflect the broader sentiment towards Siilaanyo, seen as a figure who stood for peace and cooperation in the Horn of Africa.
