Kenyan youth demands inclusivity in governance and war on Climate change
NAIROBI, Kenya - A group of Kenyan youth under the umbrella banner Activista Movement are demanding to be included in the governance structure and war on Climate Change.
Speaking in Nairobi during the commemoration of the International Youth Day which is being celebrated globally today. The group is urging President William Ruto to honor the promises he made for youth.
“Today we mark the international Youth day and we have come together to shed light on the crucial theme of this year: Green skills for youth; Towards a sustainable world." This theme underscores the significance of nurturing the skills of our youth and recognizing their indispensable role in global progress and development,” says Mary Wanjiru-Coordinator-Activista Movement.
This call comes at a time when Kenya is preparing to host the Biennial Devolution Conference next week. The 2023 Devolution is taking place at President William Ruto’s home county of Uasin Gishu county under the theme, ‘10 years of Devolution’
Mary also pointed out that youth inclusion in devolution processes is vital in addressing social problems facing them.
“The engagement and empowerment of our youth population are pivotal not only for the success of devolution initiatives but also for the overall growth and sustainability of our communities,” she adds.
This year’s International Youth Day theme is ‘Green Skills for Youth Towards a Sustainable World’
“To promote meaningful youth inclusion in devolution, we propose focusing on skills development as a catalyst for their empowerment. This approach aligns with the broader goals of sustainable development (for the future) and economic growth while providing young people with the tools to actively participate in shaping their communities,” comments Mamji Susan, Secretary-Activista Movement.
The group is made up of youth from all 47 counties in Kenya. They have proposed the following:
Skills Training Programs: Collaborate with educational institutions, vocational training centers, and industry partners to design and implement skills training programs that equip young people with practical, market-relevant skills. These programs should encompass a diverse range of fields, from technology and entrepreneurship to agriculture and healthcare. We put emphasis on Green skills: knowledge, abilities, values, and attitudes needed to live in, develop, and support a sustainable and resource-efficient society. These skills will not only help in addressing the climate crisis but also in helping achieve SDGs.
Entrepreneurial Support: Establish mentorship, incubation, and support networks for young entrepreneurs. This will encourage innovation, job creation, and economic diversification at the grassroots level.
Community Engagement: Organize workshops, town hall meetings, and youth-led forums that facilitate open dialogue between young people and local authorities. This platform encourages youth to voice their opinions, propose ideas, and actively contribute to the decision-making processes.
Digital Literacy Initiatives: Promote digital literacy among youth to enable them to harness technology for personal and community development. Digital skills are essential for communication, accessing information, and participating in an increasingly digital world
Recognition and Representation: Recognize and celebrate the achievements of young individuals who make significant contributions to their communities. Encourage their representation in local councils, committees, and decision-making bodies.
