Somalia: Hormuud Telecom Secures Yet Another Global Accolade, Highlighting Somalia’s Telecom Excellence
LONDON, UK — Hormuud Telecom, Somalia's foremost telecommunications provider, has been awarded the "Connecting the Unconnected" accolade at the 2024 Glotel Awards, recognizing its efforts to extend connectivity across the nation's rural and underserved regions.
The company, which beat out global competitors including Wifinity of the UK and SK Telecom of South Korea, was celebrated for its two-decade-long mission to rebuild and innovate Somalia's telecommunications infrastructure. Hormuud has notably expanded its network coverage and introduced 5G services in urban areas, alongside its mobile money service, EVC Plus, which has significantly improved financial inclusion.
In a recent social media announcement, Hormuud Telecom celebrated the award, reflecting on its 20-year commitment to enhancing connectivity. "From network reconstruction to introducing 5G in urban areas and supporting mobile banking with EVC Plus, we aim to empower Somalis with access to information and financial services," the company stated.
This recognition underscores Hormuud's broader impact on Somalia's socio-economic landscape, particularly through its mobile money service which has become a critical tool for both everyday transactions and the distribution of humanitarian aid in conflict-affected areas.
Hormuud's CEO, Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf, previously celebrated for his leadership, emphasized the ongoing mission. "This award is not just an endpoint but a marker of our continuous journey towards universal connectivity in Somalia," Yusuf remarked.
This prestigious award adds to Hormuud's growing collection of international honors and certifications. Just last year, Hormuud CEO, Ahmed Mohamud Yusuf, was honored with the "CEO of the Year" award at the World Communications Awards 2023, as well as the "CXO of the Year" award at the Africa Tech Festival 2023. These achievements represent a groundbreaking moment for Somalia’s telecommunications industry on the global stage.
