Somalia: Militias attack civilians in Mudug region amid ongoing talks between Puntland, Galmudug

GALKAYO, Puntland- Militias suspected to hail from Galmudug region is reported to have attacked civilians in Lan Qawar village in Jiriban district on Tuesday night, Garowe Online reports.

Reports said that the raid resulted in the death of 5 people after the militias opened fire at a home belonging to a nomadic family.

The district official of Bali Busle, Mohamed Ali Shire, spoke to Radio Garowe and confirmed the casualties of the attack. He added that another female sustained injuries from the raid, and suspecting the incident is related to clan vengeance.

Shire said regional officials are following up the update of the situation in Mudug region and reiterated responsibility to protect the region and public from aggressor.

This is not the first-time such an attack happened in Mudug region, which beset with clan clashes in the past years over water and pasture lands.

The suspected militias have fled the scene before the arrival of Puntland authoritie, and it was reported the were 10 men.

This coincides amid recent ministerial meeting between Puntland and Galmudug administrations in Galkayo city to discuss cooperation to promote stability and opening borders to facilitate commercial trade between the two regions.
