Somalia: Military court executes Police officer for killing a civilian in Afgoye town

MOGADISHU, Somalia- The Military court of the Federal Government of Somalia has executed a soldier on Saturday who was found guilty of killing a civilian, Garowe Online reports.

Addressing reporters at the scene of the execution, military court official, Mumin Hussein said they executed 28-year-old Police officer by firing squad after being convicted of killing civilian in Afgoye city.

The executed soldier, Ahmed Abdi Maday, 28, has deliberately killed Mohamed Ali Abdalla in Afgoye district in 5th January, 2016, according to the Somali military court statement seen by GO.

“On August 30, 2016, the first degree court of the military sat for hearing case against defendant Ahmed Abdi Maday, and sentenced him to death for killing Mohamed Ali Abdalla,” said Abdallahi.

Finally, the  judge has warned the government soldiers against looting or robbing the properties of civilians during battles against the Al Qaida-affiliated militant group al-Shabaab.

The military court previously executed soldiers charged with murder and suspected al-Shabaab members convicted of carrying out assassinations against officials and lawmakers in Mogadishu over the past few years.

The UN-backed Somalia's Federal government has pledged to hold its forces to account for abuses.
