Amid raging floods, Hormuud Salaam Foundation donates $1 million to victims

MOGADISHU, Somalia - Somalia's Hormuud Salaam Foundation has donated one million US dollars, which is set to help thousands of flood victims, who have been displaced from their homes.

Since last month, heavy downpours in the country have displaced nearly two million people, leaving at least 110 dead according to Somali National Disaster Management Agency [SoDMA]. The country has since declared a national emergency.

Besides displacement of people, the heavy rains have damaged roads infrastructure, and bridges, leaving thousands without access to food and urgent medical care. The government has appealed for support from international partners.

Abdullahi Nur Osman, the CEO of the charity arm of Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank, conveyed condolences to affected families while revealing that the donation will be disbursed in cash through Hormuud Telecom’s extensive mobile network, EVC Plus, ensuring support is given quickly and securely to those most in need.

“On behalf of the senior management of Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank, we extend our sincere condolences to the Somali people who are experiencing immense suffering due to the severe floods.

“These floods have resulted in significant losses of life and property, leaving many towns isolated and submerged, with water levels surpassing house heights," he said.

According to him, the organization will continue working closely with the government to alleviate affected families, adding that Hormuud will closely monitor the aid to ensure victims benefit from it.

“This year's unprecedented floods have inflicted profound and widespread displacement. Its effects have been compounded by previous years' droughts, which continue to impact the nation's recovery from challenging conditions," he said.

“Our commitment remains steadfast as we closely monitor and support those impacted by these devastating floods. The senior management and staff of Hormuud Telecom and Salaam Somali Bank are actively engaged in relief and rescue efforts to assist our affected communities during this challenging period."

Further, he asked those in the diaspora to chip in and assist thousands of victims in dire need. For decades, the foundation has been coming in handy to aid victims of various acts of nature and conflict in the Horn of Africa nation struggling with instability.
