WASHINGTON, ( GO) - Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., has introduced a war powers resolution that seeks to remove all United States armed forces from Somalia, except for those assigned to protect the U.S. Embassy. The resolution is a challenge to the Biden administration's policy in the Horn of Africa.

In a statement, Rep. Gaetz criticized the military leadership's inability to properly assess their own efficacy, saying, "How do they expect Americans to believe their justification of occupying Somalia when they can’t even determine who in their own training programs will lead a violent coup afterwards?"

He also questioned the necessity of continuing the occupation of Somalia, stating, "While the Congressional War Machine has decided to rage on in Syria, they must explain how continuing the occupation of Somalia best serves the interests of the American people at home. If they cannot, it is incumbent upon the Congress to bring our troops home from Somalia."

The war powers resolution would trigger a vote in the House of Representatives within 18 days of its introduction. It would also require the removal of all U.S. armed forces from Somalia no later than 365 days after the resolution's adoption.

The US support to Somalia greatly contributes to counter- terrorism and rebuilding of National army. Without Washington’s help experts believe Somalia government cannot defeat Terrorist organizations, Al Shabaab and ISIS.

The former President of US Donald Trump pulled out United States troops at the end of his term in 2020 which caused the resurgence of Al Shabaab.

The move comes amid ongoing concerns about the situation in Somalia, where the U.S. has been involved in counterterrorism operations against Al-Shabaab for many years. While the Biden administration has not announced any plans to withdraw troops from the country, Rep. Gaetz's resolution could prompt a debate on the issue in Congress.
