MOGADISHU, Somalia – Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is set to travel to the central town of Dhusamareeb, the capital of Galmudug state, for talks aimed at boosting the fight against al-Shabaab and advancing federal election plans, officials said.

Accompanied by senior members of the federal government, Mohamud is expected to meet Galmudug regional leaders, military commanders, and clan elders during the visit, which comes amid a renewed push to reclaim territory from the jihadist group.

“The president’s visit is focused on accelerating military operations against al-Shabaab, reviewing preparations for the elections, and strengthening cooperation with local authorities,” a source at Villa Somalia told Garowe Online.

Mohamud has previously announced major offensives in Galmudug, though al-Shabaab fighters managed to retake several areas in southern Somalia earlier this year following a withdrawal of government troops.

The president's trip underscores efforts by the federal government to reassert control in key regions and build consensus ahead of a planned electoral process.
