Somalia: Al Shabaab raids AMISOM base in Lower Shabelle region

MARKA, Somalia- Heavy fighting between Al Shabaab fighters and African Union forces broke out on Thursday, near AMISOM base located in KM-50 area in Somalia's Lower Shabelle region, Garowe Online reports.

The combat flared up after armed Al shabaab combatants launched an ambush offensive on AMISOM military outpost in KM-50 vacinity, according to a local resident who spoke on a condition of anonymity. 

The group used rocket propelled grenades and machine guns to attack the base before engaging  in fierce gunfire with the AU soldiers, added the source. 

Details of the casualties from both sides are not clear as the fighting still going on.

On Wednesday, Al Shabaab ambushed a military convoy transporting Somali troops at Barire area near KM-50 area, the latest in string of attacks against Somali troops and allied AMISOM forces in the region.

Al Qaida linked Al Shabaab group has recently intensified its attacks in a bid to overthrow the UN-backed Somali government.
