​Somalia: AMISOM vehicles run over three men on motorbike near Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia- An armored convoy belonging to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) was reported to kill 3 people in outskirts of Mogadishu on Thursday, Garowe Online reports.

The tragic incident took place on a highway at Elasha Biyaha vicinity, about 18 Km west of the capital Mogadishu, where AMISOM troop carrier knocked to death three men on a motorbike.

“AMISOM vehicles ran over a motorbike ferrying youngsters at Elasha Biyaha, along Mogadishu-Afgoye road. They died on the spot, and the convoy left the scene without paying no attention,” said a Witness.

A soldier was among those killed in the road accident, he said.

In the aftermath of the fatal incident, hundreds of people took to the streets in Elasha Biyaha, in protest of the death of the men who were run over by AMISOM’s armored vehicles early in the day.

“The residents in the area were left in utter shock as they saw the men being driven over by the AU convoy that didn’t even stop or look back at what occurred” said resident Ahmed Jama, speaking to GO over the phone.

AMISOM is yet to comment on the traffic accident that has resulted in the civilian deaths.

The road connecting Mogadishu to Afgoye town in Lower Shabelle region is a frequently used by the convoy of the UN-mandated AU forces who often make stops in of fear of IEDs and land mines.
