Somalia: Federal government to send troops to Galkayo

MOGADISHU, Somalia- Federal government of Somalia has announced it will deploy military forces to Mudug region amid renewed fighting between Galmudug and Puntland, Garowe Online reports.
In a press conference held in the capital Mogadishu, Federal Information Minister, Mohamed Abdi Hayr, stated that Somali government-term ended in September 10- will intervene to ease tensions in conflict-hit Galkayo city, the regional capital of Mudug region.
“On behalf of the Prime Minister, we instruct the Somali National Army to deploy troops to Galkayo city and surrounding areas to end fighting between warring administrations,” added Hayr.
He noted that the Somali government is urging regional leaders, politicians and traditional elders to spearhead efforts to resolve conflicts and differences to restore peace in the region.
The announcement comes after Puntland has accused Federal government on Tuesday, of supporting Galmudug troops in their aggression against civilians in northern Galkayo. However, Puntland leaders haven’t released statement in response to the recent decision of Federal government.
Last December, the warring administrations have signed a peace pact mediated by Somali government and International community but collapsed following sporadic clashes over contested areas in Galkayo.
