LONDON, Aug 18, 2026  — Thousands of mourners gathered at London’s Trafalgar Square on Tuesday to pay tribute to Jason Arday, a groundbreaking former Cambridge University professor whose recent death, amid intense media scrutiny, has sparked widespread outrage and demands for a public inquiry.

Arday, 41, died on August 14, just days after resigning from his post as professor of sociology of education at Cambridge amid allegations of plagiarism regarding his doctoral thesis.

Organized by the advocacy group Stand Up to Racism, the central London vigil saw thousands holding flowers and observing a national minute of silence. Speakers lauded Arday’s historic achievements and his role in championing students and academics from ethnic minority backgrounds.

Arday made headlines in 2023 when he became the youngest Black person ever appointed to a professorship at the University of Cambridge.

However, his death has ignited a fierce political and social debate over media pressure, structural racism, and institutional accountability. Critics accuse sections of the press of mounting a relentless campaign against him after the allegations surfaced.

Veteran MP Diane Abbott told the crowd that Arday had been targeted by a "vicious and unforgiving" media crusade that severely impacted his well-being.

Calls are now mounting for a formal public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death, with a petition garnering tens of thousands of signatures. The UK government has not yet announced whether an official probe will be launched.
