Somalia Launches Construction of New $800 Million Airport Near Capital  

MOGADISHU, Somalia - The Federal Republic of Somalia could have a new international airport within the next five years, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud announced, noting that the rapid expansion of infrastructure will be key in the revival of the country's economy.

The new airport, which is intended to decongest Aden Adde International Airport in Mogadishu, will be constructed in Haawaay, Middle Shabelle. It is set to strengthen connectivity while expanding economic growth within the country.

Within the next five years, he said, the $800 million facility shall be completed. Somalia is also planning to build a new seaport, modern road networks, healthcare facilities, and the first-ever space center in the Horn of Africa nation.

“This airport is a gateway to Somalia’s future. It is not only about travel, it is about transforming the economy, creating jobs, and advancing our national capabilities,” President Mohamud said at the ceremony, attended by federal and regional government officials.

"The new airport will provide modern facilities that adhere to international standards, making Mogadishu a key hub in East Africa," added the president, who has started defending his seat ahead of the 2026 election.

Announced in late 2024, the initiative is a flagship project of Mohamud’s administration, which has prioritized infrastructure as a catalyst for post-conflict recovery and state-building. This is intended to position Mogadishu as a regional transport hub across East Africa.

Somalia is struggling to stabilize after years of civil war, and the road transport sector is believed to be the poorest within East Africa. In most cases, people prefer air transport, which is deemed to be faster and safer, but a little expensive.

The plans coincide with Kenya's recent attempts to refurbish Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, a move which was met with resistance over contractual issues. Rwanda and Ethiopia are also building modern airports to accommodate the growing local and international demands.
