Somalia: Lower House election resumed for Somaliland community

MOGADISHU, Somalia- The ballot to elect the Lower House MPs representing Somaliland community in the Federal Parliament has resumed in the Somali capital of Mogadishu on Sunday, Garowe Online reports.

Today’s polling was hosted in the Police Transport headquarter in Mogadishu, as the electoral delegates of Somaliland community began casting voting among candidates vying for the seats.

Federal Indirect Electoral Implementation team (FIEIT) announced that 4 MPs will be elected in Sunday’s polling.

The ballot saw the election of Fadumo Odawa Rageh after receiving majority 47 votes against her rivals, while Sahra Yusuf Ige has retained her parliamentary seat after winning 38 votes to secure the fourth seat reserved for women.

The elected male MPs were Abdirahman Idaan Yonis and Abdalla Haji Ali who obtained 46 and 31 votes respectively. FIEIT has halted the election process for Somaliland community several times over complaints of disputes and interference.

So far 30 MPs out of 46 Lower House seats allocated to Somaliland were elected, as the remaining seats are scheduled to be concluded before the end of December.

According to the recent communiqué released by Somalia’s National Leadership Forum, the new Federal lawmakers are set to be sworn-in on December 27, whereas the delayed presidential election is expected to take place on January 2017.
