Renewed fighting in Baidoa threatens South West State’s stability

BAIDOA, Somalia — Heavy fighting erupted in several Baidoa neighbourhoods after forces loyal to former South West State President Abdiaziz Laftagareen attacked federal troops and forces supporting the administration led by Sheikh Aden Madobe.

Clashes were reported in the Alfaras, Boonkaay and Al-Ahmar areas. Laftagareen-aligned fighters were seen in parts of the city, while their spokesperson distributed a recorded video to the media after the attack began.

A senior commander from Laftagareen’s camp claimed that his forces captured three armed vehicles belonging to troops supporting Madobe’s administration. The claim could not be independently verified, and it remained unclear whether the fighters had established lasting control over any neighbourhoods.

Electricity was cut in parts of Baidoa, while fires were reported in civilian residential areas. No official casualty figures were immediately available.

The confrontation is part of a power struggle that intensified after federal forces took control of Baidoa in March and Laftagareen resigned. Madobe was subsequently elected South West State president with federal government support.

Repeated attacks by Laftagareen and his forces in previously stable communities threaten civilians, humanitarian operations and regional stability. The conflict could also divert government troops from fighting Al-Shabaab, allowing the armed group to exploit political divisions and security gaps.

Both sides must protect civilians. An immediate ceasefire and political negotiations are required to prevent Baidoa from becoming the centre of a prolonged conflict.
