Somalia PM defends Mogadishu deal
MOGADISHU, Somalia_ Federal Government of Somalia’s Prime Minister Omar Abdirashid Ali Sharmarke has defended new electoral proposal as Somaliland pours cold water on any representation in political talks, Garowe Online reports.
Speaking on VOA Somali Service on Saturday, Prime Minister Sharmarke has spoken out on the grounds of the country’s political stability over the next four years.
Given the prevailing political and security situations, national government has deemed 4.5 power sharing formula critically appeasing for representation in the Lower House, Prime Minister Sharmarke noted.
“The national government leadership might foresee potential political instability if the power quota is adopted on the basis of regions. We don’t want Somalia headed into [anarchic] Iraq or Afghanistan cycles,” said Somalia Prime Minister in defense.
Asked about Puntland rejection, he has stressed on the importance of shunning instability.
Irritated by the new proposal, Somaliland has vented its anger at outcome of Mogadishu political talks.
Speaking in Hargeisa, Interior Minister Ali Mohamed Waran Adde unveiled that Somaliland has not maintained presence in such talks deciding on Somalia future.
He reiterated that they declared independence from the rest of the country 25 years ago.
Officials hailing from Somaliland hold key public posts in extremely volatile Mogadishu.
International community which has backed Mogadishu-based federal government with billions in aid has expressed support for the electoral model.
