MOGADISHU, Somalia - In a significant show of solidarity with the Palestinian cause, Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Thursday publicly supported the newly brokered ceasefire in Gaza. His endorsement comes as part of a broader statement where he lauded the diplomatic endeavors of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States for their roles in achieving this temporary peace.

President Mohamud, speaking from the presidential palace in Mogadishu, stressed the importance of a united front among international and regional powers to not only reinforce the ceasefire but also to expedite the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza. The region has been grappling with a severe humanitarian crisis, with shortages of food, medical supplies, and necessities due to the ongoing conflict.

"The ceasefire is a critical step towards peace, but much more needs to be done to ensure that this peace is sustainable," Mohamud stated. He highlighted the immediate need for aid to alleviate the suffering of Gaza's residents, many of whom have been displaced and are living under dire conditions.

Further, Mohamud reiterated Somalia's long-standing position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, advocating for a peaceful and equitable solution. He called for the international community to work towards permanent peace, emphasizing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. This would be in line with the two-state solution, which envisions Israel and Palestine as two separate countries living side by side in peace and security.

The president's comments reflect a deeper engagement of Somalia in Middle Eastern politics, particularly concerning the Palestinian issue. Somalia has historically shown solidarity with Palestine, often aligning its foreign policy with other nations in the Arab and Muslim world. This statement not only solidifies that stance but also positions Somalia as an advocate for peace and justice in regional conflicts.

Mohamud's call for global unity mirrors the sentiments of many in the international community who are eager to see an end to the violence in Gaza. His remarks underscore the belief that peace in the region requires not just local efforts but a concerted, collective approach from countries around the world.

The ceasefire, which came after intense negotiations, is seen as a fragile but necessary pause in hostilities that could pave the way for more substantial peace talks. However, with the history of previous ceasefires not holding, the international community remains cautiously optimistic, with leaders like Mohamud advocating for vigilance and action to transform this moment into a lasting peace.
