Power plant south of Yemen’s capital hit in apparent strike – Houthi media

SANAA, Aug 17 – A power plant located south of Yemen’s capital Sanaa was damaged in an apparent strike early on Sunday, knocking several generators offline and causing a fire, Houthi-run Al Masirah TV reported.

The outlet, controlled by the Iran-aligned Houthis movement, did not say who was responsible for the strike, referring to it only as an “aggression.” Fire crews were reportedly working to extinguish the blaze, the channel added, citing a civil defence source.

Residents in Sanaa reported hearing at least two explosions during the night.

The incident comes amid ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Yemen, which Israel says are in response to missile and drone attacks launched by the Houthis targeting its territory. Most of the projectiles have been intercepted.

The Houthis have said their attacks are in support of Palestinians during the war in Gaza.

The United States and Britain have also carried out airstrikes on Houthi targets in recent months.

In May, Washington announced a deal with the Houthis to pause its bombing campaign in return for an end to attacks on shipping in the Red Sea, although the group said the agreement did not include halting operations against Israel.
