Mogadishu, Somalia – The Federal Government of Somalia has taken a drastic step towards environmental preservation by announcing a comprehensive ban on single-use plastic bags throughout the nation.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Ambassador Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi, introduced this significant development through a Ministerial Decree, set to be enforced from June 30, 2024.

Minister Khadija Mohamed Al-Makhzoumi underscored the gravity of the environmental challenges necessitating this decree, stating, "Somalia is proactively addressing environmental issues. By prohibiting single-use plastic bags, we are committed to conserving our environment and promoting sustainable practices."

The Ministerial Decree outlines several crucial provisions to address plastic pollution and promote sustainable practices in Somalia. First and foremost, the decree introduces a complete ban on single-use bags. This ban is set to take effect on June 30, 2024, and encompasses all aspects of single-use bags, including their importation, exportation, production, trade, and usage within Somalia.

To ensure the successful implementation of this ban, the decree also includes provisions requiring businesses engaged in the importation, manufacturing, retail, and commercial distribution of bags to comply with the directives, which means as of June 30, 2024, the import and usage of single-use bags will be strictly forbidden. This notification serves as a clear directive, emphasizing the government's commitment to enforcing the ban rigorously.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change actively advocates for eco-friendly alternatives to plastic bags. Businesses and traders are strongly encouraged to explore and adopt environmentally sustainable options, and the government has pledged its full support to enterprises engaged in seeking and implementing such alternatives, further highlighting the government's dedication to promoting environmentally responsible practices.

This historic decision showcases Somalia's dedication to environmental protection and positions it as a leader in the battle against plastic pollution. Minister Khadija reiterates, "The government's steadfast commitment aims to create a cleaner and healthier environment for its citizens and future generations."

The ban on single-use plastic bags in Somalia holds immense significance as it encourages the adoption of eco-friendly alternatives, potentially revitalizing local businesses and reducing reliance on non-biodegradable materials. Moreover, it contributes to creating a cleaner and healthier environment for the Somali population, ensuring public health and a brighter future for future generations.
