UN, IGAD congratulate Saed Deni on his election as President of Puntland

MOGADISHU, Somalia - IGAD envoy for Somalia, Mohamed Ali Guyo has congratulated Saed Deni on his election as President of Puntland following a democratic election in Garowe city, Garowe Online reports.

The special envoy highly praised Puntland government, state assembly, the elders and all stakeholders for the orderly, peaceful and transparent conduct of the parliamentary and presidential elections.

Guyo has expressed confidence that the new president will advance inclusive politics, peace and stability, economic development and consolidation of democracy in Puntland and beyond.

He reaffirmed IGAD's commitment to work with the incoming administration and build on the existing cooperation with the regional state for the benefit of the people in Puntland and Somalia.

Deni, who served as Somali planning minister in 2014 will serve a five-year term, replacing Abdiweli Mohamed Ali, who was eliminated in the first round of the vote as he contested for re-election.

In his brief speech to the parliament, Deni has pledged he will move the state forward from where his predecessor left.

The Officer-in-Charge of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia, Raisedon Zenenga, congratulates Mr. Said Abdullahi Deni and Mr. Ahmed Elmi Karash on their election as President and Vice-President of Puntland, respectively, in yesterday’s balloting in the Federal Member State’s Assembly.

The Officer-in-Charge also congratulates Puntland’s electoral commission for organising and conducting a transparent, peaceful, free and fair electoral process.

“We look forward to working closely with the administration of President Deni in Puntland,” said Mr. Zenenga. “We also commend outgoing President Abdiweli Mohamed Ali ‘Gaas’ and his administration for overseeing a peaceful transfer of power and for establishing conditions that enabled the electoral commission to conduct a successful electoral process.”
